Dear Supporter, My name is Abby, and I am one of the millions of kids across the country who has been targeted for addiction by the vaping industry. I tried my first Juul at a high school football game after being told by my friend that it was just flavored water vapor. I was immediately hooked. It affected my academics, and I served an in-school suspension when I was caught vaping in school. As a straight-A student, I was devastated. But the addiction to nicotine was so powerful. It took me several tries before I was finally able to quit. I now use my personal experience to help prevent my peers from having to go through the same thing – because we deserve better. I initiated a peer-to-peer vaping education program in my school, and advocated at the state and federal levels for bans on flavored tobacco products. I also shared my story at a press conference held by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in support of the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act, which would end the sale all flavored e-cigarettes, flavored cigars and menthol cigarettes. I was incredibly honored this year to be recognized as one of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids’ Youth Advocates of the Year. It means so much to know that my voice matters in this fight. I also know that the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is in this fight for the long run. They will not give up until the vaping industry stops hooking kids on these dangerous, highly-addictive products. The progress they’ve made over the last year – from the Protect Kids: Fight Flavored E-Cigarettes initiative to advancing the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act – gives me hope. Will you help support this critical fight? |
